Controllers are the brains behind every non-door access point in a Salto system. A wall reader, a long-distance reader, an elevator relay, or a gate barrier does not decide anything on its own: it hands the credential to a controller, and the controller applies the access rules and releases the door, strike, gate, or relay. The Salto XS4 Controller (the CU4200 family) drives two readers and comes in auxiliary or Ethernet versions, with an input/output expansion unit that adds eight relay outputs and four inputs for larger control points. The BLUEnet Door Controller brings the same logic to the BLUEnet wireless network. Controllers are specified together with the readers and the openings they drive, so they are sized to the access points, not bought by the door. They typically live in a riser closet, an electrical room, or above the ceiling near the openings they serve, wired back to power and the network. Getting the controller count and placement right at design time is what keeps an integrated lobby, elevator, or parking project clean rather than patched together later.

Integrations

Salto Controller connects to hotel PMS, guest-journey, and check-in platforms through Salto’s integration ecosystem, which is extensive and updated frequently. Rather than freeze a partial list, we point you to Salto’s own directory for the current set.

Controllers are access-control infrastructure for the Salto Space network; they pair with readers and the management platform, not with PMS directly.

Where Salto Controller fits, and where it doesn’t

EnvironmentIndoor
Form factorDoor controller
Ideal trafficVery heavy traffic Always-on access-control logic behind readers and openings; sized to the number of access points, not door traffic.

Best for

  • Driving wall and long-distance readers (two readers per CU4200)
  • Releasing elevators, gates, turnstiles, and amenity doors
  • Growing control points with the I/O expansion or BLUEnet door controller

Not ideal for

  • Self-contained electronic locks that need no separate controller
  • Sizing by room count rather than by non-door access points
  • Outdoor mounting without appropriate enclosure

Things to think about

Sized to access points, with readers

A controller drives two readers (CU4200) and can grow with the I/O expansion for larger control points. Plan controllers together with the readers and the openings they release; the number you need follows the non-door access points, not the room count.

Salto Controller: frequently asked

  • Is the Salto XS4 One good for high-traffic hotel doors?

Yes. XS4 One is a full ANSI mortise lock built for high-cycle guest-room and corridor doors. It runs roughly 60,000 openings per battery set, typically 24 to 36 months of service at hotel traffic. For very high-traffic main entrances it remains the right Salto choice over the compact XS4 Mini.

  • What is the difference between XS4 One and XS4 Mini?

They share the same credential stack (BLE, NFC, RFID, PIN), the same PMS integrations, and the same brand mobile-key compliance. XS4 One is a full mortise lock suited to high-traffic doors; XS4 Mini is a compact, indoor, lower-cost escutcheon best for value-tier and extended-stay rooms. When brand standards are silent and the door is high-traffic, XS4 One is the safer call.

  • Does XS4 One support Apple Wallet keys?

Yes. With 2024 firmware, XS4 One supports Apple Wallet room keys alongside BLE and NFC mobile credentials. RevKey confirms the exact firmware and brand mobile-key program your property is certified to before the order ships.

  • Can XS4 One be retrofitted onto existing doors?

On most doors with ANSI standard mortise prep, XS4 One drops in without millwork changes. If the door prep cannot be modified (occupied units, historic doors, custom millwork), a Neo cylinder swap is usually the better retrofit even though XS4 One is the stronger lock.
